Have you ever heard a car go by with a system so powerful you can feel it go through your body? Chances are it is a really good car audio system. In order to create the perfect system you must know a little about subwoofers, amplifiers, and speakers. You must also have some common knowledge on how to hook a system up.
Hooking up a car system can be tough and you may need to search online for a good video or directions on how to hook up a car system. First you must have either an aftermarket car stereo or a splitter that will splice the wires so that the left/right audio wires (usually red and white) will plug into the factory speakers. Second you will need an amplifier and subwoofer enclosed in a subwoofer enclosure. Third you will need aftermarket speakers and last, which is optional, you may want to get a power capacitor. I will explain each item below so you have a basic understanding of each item.
Subwoofers are the main source of bass in a system. The three main sizes of subs are 10", 12", and 15". There are 18" and 8" but they are either too small or too big in an average vehicle. You will need to put the subwoofer or woofers into a wooden box to conceal the vibrations. There are many brands of subs and enclosures so finding the best subwoofers and cheap subwoofers is a strategy. The subwoofer will hook up positive and negative wires on the inside of the enclosure to the inside port. Then you must run positive and negative wires from the amp to the enclosure. The wire type to use is "speaker" wire.
Amplifiers are the item in a car system that powers the subwoofer or speakers. A 2 channel amp is used for subwoofers while a 4 channel amp is used for the 4 speakers in your car. A top notch car system will have both. Finding cheap amplifiers can be a task because cheap amps can also mean cheap bass. Finding the best amplifiers for cheap is what you want to do. Craigslist, ebay, and our car audio store are helpful because you will want to buy the amp and sub used to knock off over half the price. The amp has many wires connecting to it. There are the speaker wires running to the subwoofer and there are 4 other wires that are very important. The red power wire runs directly to your battery. You will want to splice it and put a fuse in between the line usually closer to the battery. Then there is a negative wire running to the ground of the car. Any bolt or metal in your trunk will work for this. Then there is a small blue "remote" wire that runs to your car stereo. This tells the amp when to turn on otherwise the amp will stay on and kill your battery. Then the last wires are the audio wires. These are the red and white wires that plug into the "sub-in" on the back of your amp and runs to the back of your stereo. This is what drives the sound to your amp so the subwoofers vibrate with the bass of the music.
Getting a power capacitor is very helpful for extreme car systems, but not needed for the average system. This saves your car battery the power that the amp sucks out. The power capacitor stores powers and keeps your lights from dimming at night. You will need to run the power and negative wires from your amp to the cap and then to the outputs.
